Origins of the Name

The origin of the name Binago has been attributed to a Roman village called "Bivianus," located in the current districts of San Salvatore and Monello. However, the first time the name Binago appears in a document is around the year 774, in a sales agreement that mentions a place called Bionaco or Bionago. But there are still many uncertainties about its origin.

Binago, history and nature in the heart of Lombardy.

History

Origins

During the Roman era, the "via Novaria-Comum," a Roman road that connected the municipalities of Novara and Como passing through Castelseprio, passed through Binago. In 1045-1071, reference is made to a farm in the parish of Varese, in the place called Binago, owned by the counts of Seprio.

The Ten-Year War

During the Ten-Year War of the twelfth century, Milan clashed with Como for territorial supremacy. The control of the Seprio county was one of the reasons for the dispute. During this war, Binago was also involved, although in the end, it was aligned with Como. In 1121, an armed expedition left Como to attack the village of Varese, which had allied with Milan. During this expedition, the people of Como were defeated by the confederate troops of Binago and Vedano Olona. The people of Binago were defeated and taken prisoner in Como.
