History

The territory of San Giorgio was marked by the presence of an ancient medieval village, which is no longer in existence but has left its mark on the history of the territory. The village was in fact destroyed during the Napoleonic era to make way for new fortifications that were meant to protect the city of Mantova. Today, only Sparafucile's Hostel remains of the ancient medieval village, named after the hitman who mistakenly killed Gilda instead of the Duke of Mantua, a character from one of Giuseppe Verdi's masterpieces, Rigoletto. After World War II, the municipal territory of San Giorgio di Mantova underwent further territorial changes with the transfer to the municipality of Mantova of the fractions of Virgiliana, Frassino, Castelleto Borgo and Lunetta.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the former municipality of San Giorgio di Mantova was made up of a blue background, on which St. George on horseback appears piercing the dragon. The coat of arms was surmounted by a golden star with eight rays. The gonfalon was made up of white and red stripes. The new municipality of San Giorgio Bigarello has opened a referendum to choose the new coat of arms.
