Origins of the Name

There is still some debate about the name of Bienno: according to Dante Olivieri, the toponym derives from the pre-Latin "bova" ("landslide"), while Lo Gnaga considers it a Latin anthroponym: "Biennus". It is worth noting that the term "biennium" in Late Latin referred to the mill channel. In short, the name Bienno is part of its fascinating history.

History

The history of Bienno dates back to the Bronze Age in Europe, when the first settlements were built by the Camuni. They left numerous testimonies in the area, such as the "preda dell'altare", an erratic rock with rock engravings found in Val Camonica.

Later, thanks to the large availability of iron in the mines, Bienno and the entire Valcamonica became essential for the Roman Empire, which favored the development of the valley.

Towards the 11th century, the monks of the Order of St. Benedict arrived in the town and built the "Vaso Re". This wooden artificial canal diverted some of the waters from the nearby Grigna into the town and powered the hydraulic wheels of forges, mills, and sawmills. In particular, the forges were important for the development of the town, producing agricultural tools, pans, mason buckets, carpentry tools, and, until the 17th century, even swords and armor.

The trade of these products enriched the town and favored the construction of public works such as towers and the castle transformed into a monastery by the Benedictines. In addition, in 1295 there was a dispute with Bovegno over some high-altitude pastures, while in 1350 the Bishop of Brescia invested feuds with the rights of tithing in the territories of Bienno, for the Comune (vicinia) and the men of Bienno. In 1391, the land of Bienno suffered a widespread cattle raid caused by the Camuni Guelfs led by the Nobili di Lozio, while at the peace of Breno of December 31, 1397, the representative of the community of Bienno sided with the Ghibelline and Guelf factions.

In short, the history of Bienno is rich in events and nuances that make it even more interesting.
