Il Favaro: a village in Biella

Il Favaro, also known as "Ël Favé" in Piedmontese language, is a village located at 758 m above sea level in Biella. This locality is situated near the State Road 144 of Oropa, in a scenic saddle of the watershed between the basins of the torrents Oropa and Oremo.

History of Favaro

The inhabitants of Favaro traditionally dedicated themselves to farming, agriculture, and construction. In particular, they were known as specialized stonemasons. The surrounding area is rich in serpentinite quarries, used in the past for the production of gravel to be used for road surfacing.

Favaro was part of the Cossila municipality and in 1940 was annexed to the Biella municipal territory.

Places of interest in Favaro

One of the attractions of Favaro is the parish church of San Giuseppe, a religious building linked to the passage of pilgrims between Biella and Oropa. This church existed already in the 16th century and was built in its current form in 1789 according to the design of the architect Maggie. Being located about halfway along the route between Biella and Oropa, it was often visited by pilgrims who were going to the Marian sanctuary. In 1821 it was established as an autonomous parish and is still distinct from the other parishes of Cossila.

Hiking in Favaro

Favaro is an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. To the east of the village, in the Oropa valley, passes the path that from the center of Biella allows you to reach the Oropa Sanctuary on foot. A little further south, the seventh stage of the Grande Traversata del Biellese also passes, a hiking trail that crosses the entire Biellese region.

Conclusion

In summary, Favaro is a splendid village in Biella that offers many opportunities for nature lovers and hikers. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the parish church of San Giuseppe and admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
