Welcome to the Province of Reggio Calabria

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about the beautiful province of Reggio Calabria, which, although abolished in 2017 in favor of the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, still has a lot to offer to those who visit.

Let's discover the physical geography of the province

The province of Reggio Calabria overlooked the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, the Ionian Sea to the south and east, bordering the province of Catanzaro to the northeast and the province of Vibo Valentia to the northwest. Its geographical position was truly unique: it was the southernmost province of the Italian peninsula and was only 3.2 km away from Sicily. The province's territory covered about 220 km of coastline, from the city of Rosarno to Punta Stilo. Much of the provincial territory was covered by the Aspromonte massif, which also represented the southernmost mountainous area of Italy. The Plain of Gioia represented the only plain overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Let's explore the province of Reggio Calabria: the territory, municipalities, and history.

Many municipalities to discover

The province of Reggio Calabria included 97 municipalities, each with different beauties to discover. Among these municipalities, we remember Africo, Bovalino, Gerace, Gioia Tauro, Locri, Palmi, Reggio Calabria and many others. Each municipality had its own history and traditions, which were passed down from generation to generation.

The history of the province

The province of Reggio Calabria has an ancient history that dates back to the ancient province of Calabria Ulteriore Prima, established in 1817. The province's territory has undergone numerous changes throughout history, including Norman-Swabian and Aragonese domination. The province experienced difficult moments in the twentieth century, such as the tragedy of the 1908 earthquake and the emigration of many families to foreign countries in search of work. Despite everything, the province of Reggio Calabria has managed to recover and restart, thanks mainly to the determination of its inhabitants.

In conclusion, if you are visiting southern Calabria, you cannot miss the beautiful province of Reggio Calabria, an enchanting place where history, traditions, and scenic beauties come together to create an unforgettable experience.
