Cantalupo

Welcome to Cantalupo

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Cantalupo, a beautiful hamlet located in the municipality of Bevagna, in the province of Perugia. According to the Istat census of 2001, the hamlet has about 332 residents, making it one of the most important inhabited centers in the municipality.

History

Cantalupo is a village rich in history, as shown by the historical Statute of Bevagna which speaks of the "Castrum Cantalupi". In particular, reference is made to the presence of illegal dwellings ("huts") that were supposed to be demolished at the behest of the mayor and the Bevanati consuls. During the twentieth century, the village was enriched by numerous dwellings that gave it its present appearance.

Cantalupo: history, monuments and Umbrian cuisine.

Monuments and places of interest

If you visit Cantalupo, you cannot miss the beautiful square of the village, where you can admire characteristic buildings that have loggias dating back to the sixteenth century. In particular, one of these loggias leads to a frescoed staircase, which represents an interesting element of local art. About a kilometer from the town center, you will also find the Chiesina of Madonna della Pia, a place of worship in Romanesque style that has been recently restored.

Economy and events

Cantalupo is mainly known for the local dish, which is the snail of the "Cornu aspersum" species that is mainly served grilled. If you are a lover of traditional food, you cannot miss the snail festival which takes place during the second half of August. It is a very characteristic festival, which represents a real attraction for tourists.

But Cantalupo does not only offer gastronomic delights. If you visit the village during the Easter period, you will have the opportunity to witness the Race of the Risen Christ, a suggestive reenactment that takes place every Holy Saturday. During this event, the statue of Christ is carried by two people while running, and then it is placed back on a pedestal.

Furthermore, if you are in the area during Easter Sunday, you cannot miss the Rinchinata, a festival that represents a moment of great spirituality. During the Rinchinata, two processions, one led by the statue of the Risen Christ and the other guided by the statue of the Madonna, cross each other before returning together to the church.
