Passaggio

Welcome to the small village of Passaggio

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Passaggio, a small village in the municipality of Bettona in the province of Perugia. The village is located in the plain below the city of Bettona, near the confluence of the Topino and Chiascio rivers, and it reaches an elevation of 202 meters.

The history of Passaggio

The area of Passaggio was occupied in prehistoric times by a branch of the Lacus Umber, a vast alluvial swamp that extended for most of the Umbrian Valley. The first settlements were mainly used for commercial and exchange activities.

In 720, the Benedictine monks built the Abbey of San Crispolto, where the bishop Crispolto was martyred by the Roman Empire in the 1st century. The abbey depended on the Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and housed the saint's body. In 1266, the people of Bettona moved the saint's body to the hill, causing anger among the people of Assisi. They were placated only when the monks were given permission to enter the walls as well.

In the district of San Crispolto del Piano, there was also a hospice for the poor, managed by the confraternity of the Disciplinati Neri of Bettona.

The Passaggio plain was the scene of many wars over the centuries, including those against Perugia in the 14th century. In the 17th century, following the fortunes of Bettona, it fell under the dominion of the Papal States, and much of the land was dedicated to agriculture.

Monuments and places of interest in Passaggio

Passaggio does not have many monuments, but still offers some interesting places to visit. The Villa del Boccaglione, built in the 18th century, is a large neoclassical country residence of the Della Penna family. It was in poor condition, but since 1987 it has become a property of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and, after restoration, it will become a venue for conferences and events.

The Abbey of San Crispolto al Piano, built by the Benedictines on the ruins of a pre-existing Roman building, is now privately owned and has been completely restored as a house and farmstead. In the 12th century, it underwent updates in Romanesque architecture (apse and crypt).

The parish church of Madonna del Ponte, in modern style, with a round stone facade, is also of interest to non-believers.

For fans of performance, there is the Teatro Excelsior, which is in a privileged position on the main road.

Economy and events in Passaggio

Despite being a small village, Passaggio offers the possibility of a good quality agricultural and livestock production. There are, in fact, numerous agritourism activities available. The intact and lush countryside makes agriculture one of the main economic drivers of the area.

Passaggio is also famous for its events. The feast of San Crispolto, patron saint of the village, which is celebrated on October 25th, is the most anticipated event of the year. During the feast, there are processions and solemn masses in honor of the saint. In addition, you can taste the delicacies of the local cuisine and participate in games and shows in the square.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a quiet place, surrounded by nature, yet rich in history and culture, Passaggio is definitely the right place for you. We are waiting for you!
