Besenello
Welcome to Besenello: the small town in Trentino
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Besenello, a small town in the autonomous province of Trento with a population of around 2,732. Besenello is located on the right side, going up the Vallagarina from Rovereto to Trento, and you can immediately see the Castel Beseno overlooking the village from the top of a small hill. In this sunny and wind-protected area, surrounded by vineyards and other farms, you can find a quiet and welcoming place to relax and enjoy nature.
The physical geography of Besenello
Besenello is located in a sunny and sheltered area thanks to its position protected from the northern winds. The ascent to the mountain behind Besenello, Scanuppia - Malga Palazzo, is one of the most difficult in Europe to face by bike, with an average topographic slope of 17% and a maximum of 43%. But those who manage to face this challenge will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the Vallagarina. The ski areas of Folgaria are also just a few kilometers away.
The origin of the name Besenello
The town of Besenello takes its name from the nearby Castel Beseno, of which it was a dependency. There have been many hypotheses about the etymology of the name Beseno: from ''bis-sinus'' "double bay" (referring to two bends in a river, perhaps the Adige) or from ''bis amnis'' "two rivers" (due to the presence of two watercourses). In ancient documents, Beseno was rendered ''Besenum'' and ''Bisinum'' in Latin and ''Bisein'', ''Pissein'' and similar in German.
The history of Besenello
The first traces of prehistoric colonization are found near the town, with signs of the Bronze Age, Roman History, and Roman-Barbarian Kingdoms. The name Besenello appears as early as the 15th century when it was joined with the nearby town of Calliano. Then it became a Gastaldato, and in the last century, during the fascist period, it was again reunified with Calliano. Since 1947, it has once again been an independent municipality with a population of 1,543 inhabitants dating back to the 1936 census. The inhabitants of Besenello are commonly called Besenelòti.
The symbol of Besenello: the municipal coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms of Besenello depicts four silver globes that represent the four municipalities of the area: Besenello, Calliano, Volano, and Folgaria.
