Berzo San Fermo: Natural Beauty and Medieval History in Lombardy.

Physical geography

Territory

The territory of Berzo San Fermo is characterized by a series of hills that surround it, forming a small basin. Here, you can find natural rarities such as the Foppa forest, a beautiful Holm Oak forest. This place offers visitors the opportunity to take wonderful walks or bike rides. The area is also well connected to other nearby towns, such as Grone and Borgo di Terzo, with which it shares interesting historical and cultural aspects.

History

Berzo San Fermo has a long history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The first written document attesting to its existence dates back to the year 774, during the testimony of the toponym in the "Testament of Taidone". Over the centuries, Berzo San Fermo has preserved numerous testimonies of fortifications and medieval constructions, often incorporated into more recent buildings. In the past, the village was a stopping point for armies passing through the Cavallina Valley, which contributed to its historical importance. In 1900, Berzo San Fermo was merged with neighboring towns of Borgo di Terzo, Vigano San Martino, and Grone, forming the municipality of Borgounito, which retained this name until 1948 when the towns were once again split.

Symbols

Blazon: "Golden cherry tree with green leaves, adorned with fifteen red cherries, crossed by a standing, black-and-white piebald cow, with the cherry tree nourished and the cow standing on a green plain, all accompanied on the top right corner by a six-rayed, blue star. Exterior ornamentation of the Municipality ". The symbol represents the peculiarity of the territory with the cherry tree, which produces prized fruits, the vast plain surrounding it, and the piebald cow, a symbol of the agriculture that the area is rich in.

Monuments and points of interest

Religious architecture

Berzo San Fermo is characterized by several very suggestive medieval churches, such as the one dedicated to Santo Stefano, located near the border with the town of Grone. This church was built in several stages, reaching its current form in the 11th century. Among the frescoes inside the church, there is one that depicts the martyrdom of Santo Stefano.

The parish church, on the other hand, is dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico and dates back to the 14th century, although tradition tells us that it was erected on a small chapel that housed the bodies of the saints five centuries earlier. The parish church, expanded in the 17th century, houses paintings by Gian Paolo Cavagna, Francesco Lorenzi, Gianbettino Cignaroli, and Federico Ferrario. And that's not all: legend has it that Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg stopped at the church of Saints Fermo and Rustico, trying to cure his horses of an epidemic that had struck them, and the intercession of the patron saints occurred.

Society

Demographic evolution

The population of Berzo San Fermo has undergone remarkable changes throughout its history. In 1921, the year in which the town separated from its neighboring towns, the population recorded a record of 2,138 inhabitants, while in 1951, the number dropped to less than a thousand before recovering. At the 2011 census, the population of Berzo San Fermo was 1,428 inhabitants.

Administration

The municipality of Berzo San Fermo is governed by a mayor and a fifteen-member council.
