Welcome to Berzo Demo: a municipality in Val Camonica
Berzo Demo is a small municipality in the province of Brescia, Lombardy, located in the beautiful Val Camonica. With its 1508 inhabitants, it consists of the three villages of Monte, Berzo and Demo, crossed by the state road 42 of Tonale and Mendola. The territory of Berzo Demo borders other municipalities in the area, including Cevo, Sonico, Malonno, Paisco Loveno, Sellero and Cedegolo.
Discovering the geography of Berzo Demo
The municipality of Berzo Demo is located on the southern slopes of Pian della Regina. Thanks to its location, it offers beautiful landscapes and a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. The downstream village, Demo, owes its name to the Trentino term "dema", which means "way". Berzo, on the other hand, derives from the pre-Roman term "Bersium", which means animal enclosure.
The history of Berzo Demo
The history of Berzo Demo has roots dating back centuries. Already in 1299, the consuls of the vicinity of Berzo and Demo went to Cemmo to swear loyalty to the bishop of Brescia and pay the tenth owed. In 1365 the Diocese of Brescia invested iure feudi of the rights of tithe in the territories of Breno, Vione, Vezza d'Oglio, Sonico, Malonno, Berzo Demo, Astrio, Ossimo and Losine. In 1423 the bishop of Brescia Francesco Marerio invested iure feudi of the rights of tithe in the territories of Monno, Cevo, Andrista, Paisco Loveno, Saviore dell'Adamello, Cemmo, Ono San Pietro, Sonico, Astrio, Malegno, Cortenedolo, Vione, Incudine and Berzo Demo. In 1760 Berzo, Demo and Monte had a total of 790 inhabitants. From 1927 until 1948, the municipality of Berzo Demo was united with Cedegolo.
Berzo Demo today
Today Berzo Demo is a peaceful and tranquil municipality, which mainly thrives on agriculture and tourism. In the past, one of the symbols of the village was the graphite electrodes establishment of the anonymous company Elettrografite di Forno Allione, also depicted in the municipality coat of arms. This establishment, founded in 1929, later passed to the multinational Union Carbide, which ceased all production activities in 1994.
What to see in Berzo Demo
Berzo Demo offers visitors numerous places of interest, including the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the seventeenth century, the church of San Rocco, located in the center of Demo, also dating back to the seventeenth century, and the church of Sant'Antonio abate in Monte. Among the other attractions not to be missed there are the Parito waterfall, located a few kilometers from Berzo Demo, and the ascent to Mount Badolo, the summit that overlooks the village and offers a spectacular view of Val Camonica.
