Pozzecco: a hamlet of the Municipality of Bertiolo

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about Pozzecco, a geographical hamlet of the Municipality of Bertiolo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This is a small locality, but it is very interesting for its history and the origins of its name.

Origins of the name

Let's start by talking about the origins of the name Pozzecco. According to Professor Passone's theory, the name derives from the Latin base "Pozeco". This root fits well with the two terms "puteo sicco", which indicate a locality where dry wells are found. Interesting, isn't it?

History

Now I want to tell you a little about the history of this hamlet. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Pozzecco came under the dominion of the Lombards, who introduced important innovations in the agricultural and defensive systems of the area. Subsequently, the Franks imposed their dominion over the entire area. In the 10th century, the Hungarian invasions devastated the territory causing serious damage to the economy and the people. The rebirth of Pozzecco was entrusted to the Patriarchs of Aquileia, who ruled the region until the 15th century.

From the 15th to the 18th century, the area passed from the dominion of the Patriarchs to that of the Republic of Venice. In the 17th century, the population of Pozzecco had a significant increase, going from 286 people in 1646 to 560 in 1660. The demographic growth continued until 1932, when there were as many as 1146 inhabitants.
