Berra

Welcome to Berra!

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk to you about Berra, a beautiful village in Riva del Po in the province of Ferrara. With its 4743 inhabitants, Berra is a lively town with a lot of history behind it. In fact, the first artifacts found in the locality of Cologna testify to human presence since the end of the Roman era. But let's discover this little gem in Northern Italy.

History

Berra has a long and fascinating history, strongly linked to the Po river and the morphology of the territory. During the Middle Ages, the town was predominantly in Venetian territory, but with the Rotta di Ficarolo of 1152 and the following years, the morphology of the territory was significantly disturbed, causing its separation from the Venetian shore. Later, it became part of the municipality of Ferrara and was delivered to the Este family in 1194. With the death of Alfonso II d'Este, Berra returned under the direct control of the Papal State.

Following the Napoleonic period, the town was returned to the Papal State in 1816. In 1901, during a union demonstration, the military opened fire on the crowd, killing two protesters and wounding twenty people. In 1909, Berra became an autonomous municipality.

Welcome to Berra: history, nature and traditions in the Po Delta Park.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the Berra municipality consisted of three stars, which represented the three fractions that made up the municipality - Berra, Cologna, and Serravalle - and the torch, which symbolized freedom.

Physical geography

Berra is part of the Regional Park of the Po Delta and the interregional Po Delta Park, although the latter is not yet fully operational. Being located on the banks of the Po, the town is very peaceful and offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset.

Events

Berra is a very active town from a cultural and recreational point of view. Among the main events every year, we find the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, which is held on June 24th. During this festival, the church dedicated to the saint is open to the public, and you can admire the works of art inside.

In September, instead, the Pumpkin Festival is held, a gastronomic festival dedicated to this particular vegetable. On this occasion, you can taste delicacies based on pumpkin, accompanied by good wine and excellent music.

What to do

In addition to traditional festivals, Berra offers many activities for those who want to spend a pleasant day outdoors. You can take walks along the river, do sports activities such as cycling or jogging, or simply relax in one of the many city parks.

Merger with the Municipality of Ro

Upon proposal of Mayor Eric Zaghini, the City Council has decided to merge the Municipality of Berra with the Municipality of Ro. The proposal, submitted to a referendum, was approved by citizens with 53% of the votes. This led to the suppression of the Municipality of Berra, fixed for December 31st, 2018, and the consequent decay of the last City Council and the last Mayor.

Conclusions

Berra is a fascinating town, rich in history and traditions. Ideal for those seeking tranquility and nature, it also offers many leisure activities and a wide choice of cultural and recreational events. So, if you are planning a visit to Emilia-Romagna, do not miss the opportunity to discover the beauties of Berra and the Regional Park of the Po Delta. We are waiting for you!
