In 1198, Bernezzo participated in the Caraglio revolt and received considerable aid from neighboring communities. The revolt was victorious, overwhelming the troops of the Caraglio despot. This event led to the birth of the city of Cuneo. The first document attesting to the existence of Bernezzo dates back to 1223 and is a peace treaty concluded between the Marquis of Saluzzo Manfredo III and the Count of Savoy Thomas.
