Bergamasco
Bergamasco: a little gem in Monferrato
Hello everyone! Today I'll tell you about Bergamasco, a town in Piedmont located in the province of Alessandria. With only 732 inhabitants, this small town is located on the hills of Monferrato, on the left bank of the Belbo river. Let's explore the history, symbols, monuments, and everything that concerns this small jewel of Piedmont.
History
The history of Bergamasco dates back to the medieval era, when it was a fortress owned by the Marquis of Incisa. In 1514, it was conquered by Guglielmo IX of Monferrato and became part of the Marquisate of Monferrato. Since then, Bergamasco has followed the fortunes of Monferrato.
Symbols
The coat of arms and flag of Bergamasco were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic on March 11, 1991. The coat of arms is divided: the first is azure, with nine gold stars with six rays, arranged 3, 3, 2, 1; the second is silver, with a blue castle formed by two Ghibelline-style crenellated towers, connected by a wall curtain without battlements. The flag is a white cloth. The coat of arms includes the shield of the Incisa family, which was "azure, with nine gold stars: 3, 3, 2, 1."
Monuments and places of interest
In Bergamasco, there is a private castle owned by the set designer Carlo Leva, which houses a cinema museum. This castle is included in the circuit of "Open Castles" of Lower Piedmont, so if you have the opportunity, don't miss the chance to visit it! In 1985, a Roman sarcophagus, used as a drinking trough, was found in the agricultural estate of S. Cristoforo. The artifact, dating back to the 2nd century and belonging to a freedman named Calventius of the tribe Gens Papiria, is preserved in the atrium of the town hall.
