Beregazzo con Figliaro
A Brief History of Beregazzo con Figliaro
Beregazzo con Figliaro is a municipality located in the Como province of Lombardy, with a population of approximately 2772 inhabitants, and is composed of the nuclei of Figliaro and Beregazzo. This municipality was founded in the Middle Ages and has a long and interesting history.
Historical Roots
The first historical mention of Figliaro dates back to 1289 in a list compiled by the chaplain of Rovello Porro, which surveyed all the churches dependent on the parish of Appiano. Figliaro was part of these locations and was involved in the maintenance of the road from Bolà, along with Beregazzo, which was already present in the "Statutes of the waters and roads of the province of Milan made in 1346".
During the Duchy of Milan, the fiefdom of Figliaro passed from the hands of the Del Rio Noriega to the Litta family. In 1751, it was still a beneficiary of the fiefdom, and in 1753, Figliaro joined Beregazzo, forming the municipality of Beregazzo con Figliaro, included in the parish of Appiano.
In 1786, Beregazzo con Figliaro became a municipality of the Province of Varese, within Austrian Lombardy. The creation of the Province of Como by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, following the fall of Napoleon and the repeal of the administrative reorganization decree of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, which had temporarily added Beregazzo con Figliaro to the municipality of Binago, led to the separation of the two communities.
The Name of the Municipality
Despite the separation, the municipality continued to exist under the name of Beregazzo until 1912 when the name "con Figliaro" was reintroduced. In the following years, the municipality underwent some administrative changes, such as the aggregation with Castelnuovo Bozzente, which led to the creation of the municipality of Mirabello Comasco. However, the union lasted only twenty years, until 1948.
Symbols of the Municipality
The coat of arms of the municipality of Beregazzo con Figliaro was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on February 5, 2005. It represents the communities of Beregazzo and Figliaro, ideally united by the bridge into a single municipality, and features the black pot in which pult is cooked, a symbol of the inhabitants of Beregazzo, and the rooster, a symbol of the Figliaresi.
In conclusion, Beregazzo con Figliaro, with its rich and fascinating history, represents a small jewel of Lombardy that is worth visiting and discovering.
