The Church of the Holy Crucifix: history and art in one place
The Church of the Holy Crucifix was built in 1599 by the brothers of the Congregation of Santa Maria del Pianto, with the continuous and large donations of the citizens. In 1728, the church was given the dual denomination of Santa Maria del Pianto and the Holy Crucifix, to more precisely identify the sacred building.
It was the Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix that changed the name and modified the name of their church in 1732. This was determined by the wooden sculpture depicting the crucified Christ placed on the main altar, created in 1711, at the time when the church almost certainly assumed the new denomination of the Holy Crucifix.
