Belmonte del Sannio

Exploring the small town of Belmonte del Sannio

Hello friends! Today I'm going to tell you about Belmonte del Sannio, a small town in the province of Isernia, in Molise, where history and landscape merge into a breathtaking mix.

Physical Geography

Belmonte del Sannio is situated on a hill that extends on the right bank of the high valley of the Sente stream, a tributary of the Trigno river. This location, combined with the presence of the famous bridge that connects the town to Abruzzo, makes Belmonte a place to admire one of the most spectacular views in the entire region.

Belmonte del Sannio: history, landscapes, and monuments to discover.

History

The origins of the village date back to the Sannites, who populated the area and erected numerous fortifications to protect it from Roman invasions. The presence of the Sannites is still reflected in the territory, as evidenced by the Sannite tomb of Ovio Paccio, a general of the Sannites, traces of which are found near the Sant'Angelo hill.

Over the centuries, Belmonte del Sannio has been a fiefdom of important families, such as the Borrello, Caracciolo and Caldora, until it became part of Molise after the Napoleonic reorganization and, subsequently, of the province of Isernia. Today, the town is distinguished for the beauty and richness of its historical and architectural heritage.

Monuments and places of interest

The church of San Salvatore is one of the main landmarks of the town. Destroyed several times by earthquakes, the church was rebuilt in 1865, maintaining the structure and decorations of the fifteenth-century churches. Inside, you will notice the altars of the Conception and San Rocco, originally from the old church, and the neobaroque style that characterizes the furnishings.

The Lombard tower is another attraction not to be missed. This imposing circular tower dates back to the 9th century and is located in the old village. Access to the tower is allowed, so you can admire the window at the top of the tower and enjoy the spectacular view.

Finally, the Sannite tomb of Ovio Paccio, located near the Sant'Angelo hill, is another place to visit to share the history and identity of the town.

Final notes

Belmonte del Sannio is a small and isolated town where you can imagine the peaceful and authentic life that characterizes the most remote areas of our country. Despite its difficult geographical location, it is worth visiting: you will enjoy breathtaking natural scenery and discover the historical significance of the territory. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this town and plan your next trip out of town.
