Annunziata

Welcome to Annunziata!

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Annunziata, a charming location situated in the municipality of Belmonte Calabro, in the province of Cosenza. Annunziata is located inland, 384 meters above sea level, and is about two kilometers from the historical center.

The history of Annunziata

Annunziata is probably located in the area of the ancient village of Tingia, pre-existing the foundation of the Castle of Belmonte Calabro, which took place under the Angioins in 1270. The church that gives the name to the location is one of the oldest Christian places of worship in the area, probably built on an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Inside the church, there is a sarcophagus representing St. George killing the dragon, one of the first testimonies of Christian presence in the area. The old church collapsed in 1434, and in 1490, the Archdiocese of Cosenza-Bisignano, with the help of the powerful Carlo Domenico Del Carretto, ordered its reconstruction, which was completed only in 1523.
