History

The name Castion derives from the parish church built in the 14th century by the Confraternity of Santa Maria dei Battuti. In the late Roman and early medieval periods, the Castellione castle was built to defend the Prealpine passes. The remains of the castle were found in 1977 in the locality of Sant'Anna di Pedecastello. The town also preserves the Assumption of the Virgin by Cesare Vecellio. In Castion, there are also the church of Tascio Cecilio Cipriano and that of the Battuti, which today is used as a baptismal font.

Villa Miari Fulcis

One of the main attractions of Castion is Villa Miari Fulcis, a 17th century villa located in the locality of Modolo. In the 18th century, important expansion and embellishment works were carried out. The villa was the residence of the Miari Fulcis counts, a noble family among the most important in the city of Belluno, whose origins date back to the year 1000. According to some scholars, the villa is one of the greatest examples of a villa perfectly integrated into the tradition of the most significant Venetian models. The villa was completed in 1806 and became one of the major and best-preserved villas in the province of Belluno, still the residence of the firstborn branch of the Miari Fulcis family. Professor Francesco Miari Fulcis (1855-1929), an appreciated astronomy professor at the University of Padua, created the particular meridians designed on the church and warehouses of the villa.

Sports

Castion has some sports clubs, including a football one, whose first team participates in the second category championship, and a volleyball one. The "Artica Dolomiti" association also offers lessons in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics and its teams also compete at the national level.
