Discovering Bedero Valcuvia

Hello friends! Today I will take you on a journey to discover Bedero Valcuvia, a municipality of 660 inhabitants located 15 km from the capital city of Varese, in the Lombardy region. Are you ready to explore all the secrets of this wonderful town? Let's go!

Physical geography

Bedero Valcuvia is located on the border between Valcuvia and Pralugano Valley, at the foot of Mount Scerrè. It is famous for being "The Balcony of Valcuvia" as it offers a panoramic view of the valley below. Although it's not part of the Valcuvia Mountain Community, geographically, in terms of history and traditions, Bedero Valcuvia is considered an integral part of Valcuvia's territory.

Territory

Around the town, there are some geological curiosities that arouse the interest of geologists, such as the "moutonées" - rounded rock beneath the village, of volcanic origin - and the "sassi rossigni" - magnetic stones that can be found in the area.

Trails

The Campo dei Fiori Regional Park includes the "Path 16" that leads to Mount Martica where you can admire the remains of two artillery outposts of the Northern Border, built before World War I. Path 15, instead, leads to Val Ganna. The "Cadorna Line trail" is located just outside Bedero along the road that leads to Cunardo.

Origin of the name

The name 'Bedero Valcuvia' seems to derive from the term 'bedrum' or 'bedre', indicating the connection with the birch, a plant that may have been very common in the past. Also, the Celtic-Germanic root 'by-dro' which means "village on a valley slope."

History

The center of the town maintains a medieval structure with narrow streets ("i bocci") and stone houses that lean on each other. In the past, the town produced rye, fruit, various vegetables, mushrooms, chestnuts, pastures, and livestock.

The municipality was annexed to other municipalities over the centuries, but regained its administrative autonomy in 1816 with the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom.

Conclusion

This is all you need to know about Bedero Valcuvia. If you enjoy hiking and walking in nature, Bedero Valcuvia is definitely a place you must visit. Enjoy the panoramic view of Pralugano Valley from the "Balcony of Valcuvia." And don't forget to document your trip and share your experiences on social media!
