Welcome to Baucina: a small gem in Sicily

Baucina is an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily, with a population of about 1842 inhabitants. Locally known as Bbašina, its municipal territory covers an area of ​​about 13.55 km². It is easily accessible from different road directions, including the SS 121. The mountainous part of the territory is part of the Pizzo Cane, Pizzo Trigna and Grotta Mazzamuto Oriented Nature Reserve.

A brief history of Baucina

The Municipality of Baucina has an interesting history. The coat of arms and the gonfalone of Baucina were granted by the President of the Republic on June 11th, 1997, with the gonfalone being a yellow flag. It was created in 1821 thanks to the merger of three ancient fiefs: Baglio Santa Croce and Santa Rosalia, Santa Maria and San Marco. It was the center of brigandage in the 19th century and was personally involved in the 1860 revolution.

Places of interest

Churches are among the places of interest in Baucina. The Mother Church, Santa Rosalia, dates back to 1764. The Church of Maria's College, built in 1745, houses a precious urn that contains the body of Santa Fortunata. The Church of Santa Croce was built in 1870 and the Church of Santa Rosalia preserves the bust of the Saint. In addition, there are other churches such as the Church of the Calvary, the Church of the Redeemer, the Church of Merciful Love and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, dating back to 1749.

The Municipal Park is located within a large park where it is possible to admire the bronze monument to the ''Fallen in War'' created by artist Vincenzo Piranio in 1925.

The Baucina Archaeological Museum was inaugurated in 2013 and collects some archaeological artifacts found within the municipal territory.

Demographic evolution

The Municipality of Baucina has undergone numerous population transformations over the past decades. In 1871 the population was 5030 inhabitants, while in recent years a demographic decline has been observed. In 2020, the population was about 1842 inhabitants.

Culture and gastronomy in Baucina

Baucina offers a mix of culture and traditions. Cultural and artistic events are organized throughout the year, such as the feast of Sant'Anna and Madonna del Rosario. In addition, there are some restaurants and bars where you can taste the typical delicacies of Sicilian cuisine, such as pasta with sardines.

Transport and services

The Municipality of Baucina is well connected to Palermo thanks to some roads and a good public transport network. The bus stop is located in Piazza Regina Margherita.

Administration

The Municipality of Baucina is governed by the Mayor elected by direct vote of the population. The current Mayor is Giuseppe Giacalone, who took office in 2018.
