Battuda
Welcome to Battuda!
Hello everyone! Today I'm talking to you about Battuda, a small municipality with 683 inhabitants located in the province of Pavia, in Lombardy. We are in the plain between the Ticino River and the Naviglio Pavese, in the northwest of the region.
A history stemming from the dialect
The name Battuda comes from the local dialect, in which "batüda" or "batüva" refer to the beaten fields and roads. The municipality has belonged to the territory of Pavia since ancient times and was part of the "Campagna Soprana" of Pavia. Throughout the centuries, it was a fiefdom of various noble families, including the Pallavicino, Isimbardi, and Bellini of Milan. In 1872, it was established by the merger of the municipalities of Battuda, Torradello, and Torrino.
Symbols
The coat of arms and flag of Battuda were granted by decree of the president of the Republic in 1992. The coat of arms depicts the letter B, and there are stars, symbolizing the Isimbardi family who once ruled the territory. The flag is yellow.
Monuments and places of interest
Although Battuda is a small municipality, there are some monuments and places of interest worth visiting.
Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary: Built between 1554 and 1579, this church is first mentioned in 1460. It is a historic building that still has its original frescoes.
Church of Saint Riccardo Pampuri: This is the smallest church in Battuda and is located in the hamlet of Torrino. The saint to whom the church is dedicated lived with his uncles in Torrino. The interior has a single nave and is 10 meters long. Next to the church is a 14-meter-high bell tower that houses a concert of three bells in Sib3.
Society
Looking at the demographic evolution, we can see that the number of inhabitants of the municipality has grown over the years. In 1751, there were only 200 inhabitants, while 200 years later, in 1959, there were 317 people.
Conclusions
Battuda is a small municipality worth visiting. If you're in the area, I recommend taking a few hours to discover its monuments and its history. See you soon!
