History

Origins

Bassiano has an ancient and fascinating history that dates back to the 10th century. The foundation of the hillside center occurs due to the continuous barbarian raids, which force a small group of shepherds and farmers to take refuge in a place completely covered from the plain's view.

The first written records about Bassiano date back to 1169, and in a document found in the archive of the collegiate church of Santa Maria in Sermoneta, reference is made to the recovery of the Castrum, which was fraudulently seized by a certain Gregorio Leonis from a Lord of Bassiano.

Some authors have referred to mythological deities and Roman emperors to explain the origins of Bassiano, but most historians agree that the town's name derives from the anthroponym "Bassianus." This name may have been attributed to the Castle of Acquapuzza in ancient times, and then transferred to the hillside center due to a population migration.

Middle Ages

In 1240, Pope Gregory IX names Trasmondo Annibaldi Lord of the Castles of Sermoneta and Bassiano to thank him for his help against Frederick II of Swabia's invasion attempts.

Conclusions

Bassiano is a magical place that combines the beauty of nature with the territory's ancient history. Suitable for mountain and outdoor lovers, it offers numerous opportunities for excursions and walks. Don't miss the opportunity to visit such a special municipality and discover all its hidden treasures!
