The historical name of the municipality was derived from a Slavic colony established in the medieval era, but during the nationalist period it was changed to Basiliano. Physical geography

The municipality of Basiliano is located in the Friuli plain, about 18 km from Udine, with an average altitude of 30 meters.

History

The municipality's flag is blue and comes from a municipal symbolism dating back to June 16, 1959.

Basiliano is rich in monuments and places of interest. Among the main ones, there are the Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo di Vissandone, the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo di Orgnano, the countryside Church of San Leonardo in Variano, the countryside Church of San Marco and the Monument to the Fallen of the First World War by Aurelio Mistruzzi, located in Piazza in Basiliano.

Demographics

The population of Basiliano is constantly changing. Over time, the Friulian language has always been present alongside Italian. According to Resolution No. 2680 of August 3, 2001 of the Government of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Municipality is included in the list of Italian municipalities of the Friulian language for the purposes of the application of laws 482/99, 15/96 and 29/2007.

Culture

Events

The municipality of Basiliano is also famous for its cultural and traditional events. "Danzando tra i popoli", a festival of folk dances held in September in the village of Blessano, is one of the most important events. In addition, in mid-March, the "Fieste dai ucei" ornithological market and fair takes place in Blessano, while in October the village of Villaorba hosts the "Perdon da las Masanètes" - the crab festival. The festival of Sant'Andrea, celebrated on November 30th in Basiliano, and "Luglio varianese" - the summer festival held in Variano in July, are other unique opportunities to discover local traditions.

Anthropogenic geography

The municipality consists of six villages (Visepente, Blessan, Orgnan, Varian, Vilevuarbe and Vissandon). The presence of a population of Slavic origin brought to these lands around the year 1000 to repopulate them after the devastating raids of the Magyars is attested by the historical name of the municipality: Pasian Schiavonesco.
