Basiglio

Welcome to Basiglio

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Basiglio, a town located in the southern hinterland of Milan, here in Lombardy. Basiglio has 7970 inhabitants and also includes the famous residential district of Milan 3. If you're curious to learn more about this place, then you're in the right place!

The origin of the name

The name Basiglio seems to derive from the Latin "basis", which means "column base". Probably, in the past, there was a milestone in this area, so "basis" should be understood as "basement of a milestone for road distances signaling". However, there are other hypotheses about the meaning of the name, such as "basileus" which means "king" or "leader", or "basei", which means "milestone".

Basiglio: history, farms and the medieval castle.

The history

The origin of Basiglio dates back to Roman times, when Milan became the headquarters of one of the most important cavalry commands of the Roman Empire. Basiglio developed along the "via Mediolanum-Ticinum", an important road artery that started from Quinto de 'Stampi up to Pavia. However, the road was used until the construction of the Naviglio Pavese.

The town was first mentioned in a document from the XIV century, in which it reads "loco de Baxilio", although the exact pronunciation was "Basilio". In 1524, during the wars of Italy of the XVI century, a battle took place in Basiglio between the French and Spanish troops sent by Charles V of Habsburg, commanded by Fernando Francesco d'Avalos. The clash took place in the area where today is the Penati farm and ended with the victory of the French.

The farms of Basiglio

Do you want to know more about the farms of Basiglio? Here are some interesting details! While, Romano Paltano was the smallest inhabited center with few farms until 1971.

The Castle

Let's discover more about the "Castle" of Basiglio! It was located near Piazza Monsignor Rossi and was a fortified construction used to control the viability and for signaling with fires to other similar buildings, such as the one existing until recent times in Rozzano vecchia.
