Physical geography
From a geographical point of view, Basiano has an area of about 7.88 km² and is located in the Po Valley. It is about 30 km east of Milan, halfway between the cities of Bergamo and Monza. The altitude varies from 184 to 278 meters above sea level and the territory is crossed by the Trobbia stream, which also extends into other nearby countries.
History
The origin of the name Basiano dates back to the Roman era, when the toponym "anus" was connected to the owner of the land, "Basilius". The name of the town underwent numerous changes throughout history, from "Paxiliano" in 893 AD to "Basilianum" in 1192, until the current "Basiano" in 1700.
The settlement in the area dates back to the 1st century AD, when the first houses were built around the monastery founded in the ninth century and under the direct control of Rome. The monastery of Basiano, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was entrusted to a community of Cistercian nuns. In the 6th and 7th centuries, many Lombard families settled in the area.
Wine production
The territory of Basiano, together with that of Masate, has always been a center of excellence for wine production. Over the years, numerous varieties of native grapes have been cultivated, such as Barbera, Moscato, and Bonarda. Even today, Basiano hosts numerous wineries and restaurants where you can taste the exquisite local wines and typical cuisine of the area.
