Baschi

Hi everyone! Today, I'm going to talk about Baschi, a charming municipality in Umbria, located in the province of Terni.

Physical geography

Baschi is a hilly town, with a climate classification of zone D, 1665 GR/G.

History

The town has very ancient origins: an old castle, turned medieval town, was built at the end of the 9th century by Ugolino or Galino di Biscaglia, a Carolingian officer who came to Italy with Charlemagne, who gave him an old castle in the Tiber Valley. There, Ugolino di Biscaglia built a new castle which he named Baschi, after his nickname. The Baschi family, one of the most powerful in central Italy, had control over more than 60 castles in the area and had founded a large fortress with a castle. This fortress, privately owned and reduced to ruins, is located in the locality of Carnano, in the municipality of Montecchio's fraction of Tenaglie.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are an art lover, we suggest you visit the parish church of San Nicolò, built in the second half of the 16th century. Inside, it houses a polyptych from the 15th century by Giovanni di Paolo. Baschi is also a popular destination during the summer months, especially among tourists from the Rome area.

Society

The population of Baschi is 2579 inhabitants.

Infrastructure and transportation

The municipality is connected via the Strada statale 205 Amerina to Orvieto, where you will find access to the Autostrada del Sole. The town is also connected to the Strada statale 448 di Baschi, from which it takes its name, and the Strada provinciale 92, which leads to the municipality of Montecchio. If you are traveling by train, note that the town was served until 2011 by the Florence-Rome Railway, also known as the "slow line," which stopped at Baschi Station.

Administration

The municipality has had several mayors over the years, including Alberto Busso, Isauro Grasselli, Anacleto Bernardini, and the current mayor, Damiano Bernardini.
