Physical geography

Origins of the name

During Roman civilization, Barzio was passed through by the famous "Via Spluga," a Roman road that connected Milan to Lindau, passing through the Spluga Pass. During the medieval period, the "Civic and Criminal Statutes of the Valsassinese Community" were in force, which contributed to the town's growth. In the 16th century, the population consisted of just over three hundred inhabitants. Later, with the economic and social improvement of the population and the advent of mass tourism, numerous villas and condominiums appeared.

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Barzio was granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on September 22, 1992. The three eight-pointed stars and the lion recall the Valsassina and the importance of this town for the entire valley.

The Barzio Municipal Library, located in Palazzo Manzoni, has a Manzonian Library Fund, entirely dedicated to the figure of Alessandro Manzoni, his works, and related criticisms.
