A bit of history

Our province of Lecco was established in 1992, with the separation of the eastern part of the Como province and some municipalities belonging to the Bergamo province. Subsequently, some consultative referendums were held to merge some cities and towns, but currently our province has 84 municipalities.

Physical Geography

Territory

The province of Lecco covers an area of 805.61 km², of which 600 km² are located beyond the Adda river, in Valsassina, while the rest are in the area of Brianza divided between the territories of Oggiono, Casatenovo, and Meratese. Furthermore, there are 16 km² that belong to the municipality of Oliveto Lario, located on the other side of Lake Como and fall within the Lecchese pre-Alps area.

The territory of the province of Lecco is mainly mountainous, with a percentage of 70%, while the remaining 30% is hilly.

Hydrography

The province of Lecco is entirely included in the Po river basin and is fed by its tributaries, the Adda and the Lambro.

Lakes

The province of Lecco is located in the pre-Alpine area, characterized by numerous glacial lakes. The main one of these is Lake Como, on which 13 municipalities overlook, as well as marking the border with the province of Como for most of its length. Moreover, there are other lakes such as Lake Annone, Lake Garlate, Lake Olginate, and Lake Sartirana.

To the west, the municipalities of Rogeno, Bosisio Parini, and Cesana Brianza overlook Lake Pusiano, which borders the province of Como.

Rivers

The main river that crosses the province is the Adda river, which forms a small canyon in Meratese and marks the eastern border with the province of Bergamo.
