Over the years, there have been 4 advisory referendums to merge some municipalities and another to change province, but the province has remained the same. Today, the Province of Lecco is an important component of the Regio Insubrica and the historic region of Insubria.
Physical geography
Over 70% of the Province of Lecco is made up of mountains, while the remaining 30% is hilly. There is no plain. The province is located in the pre-Alpine area and is characterized by numerous glacial lakes.
The most important lake is Lake Como, which is home to 13 municipalities. The territory also includes Lake Annone, Lake Garlate and Lake Olginate. Lake Pusiano is located to the west of the province and borders the Province of Como.
The main river that runs through the province is the Adda, which forms a small canyon in Merate. The Adda also marks the eastern border with the Province of Bergamo.
