Discovering Lake Barrea

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Lake Barrea, a beautiful destination located in the province of L'Aquila, in the Alto Sangro area. The lake is artificial, created in 1951 by damming the Sangro river at the Barrea gorge. The municipalities of Civitella Alfedena and Villetta Barrea also overlook it.

History

The first proposal for the creation of a lake in this area dates back to 1922, but it met with a lot of opposition from institutions and organizations due to the damage it would have caused to the local economy and the risk of malaria. The project was suspended by the fascist regime thanks to the opposition of the park president, Erminio Sipari. After the war, in 1949, the construction of the dam that led to the creation of the lake began.

Lake Barrea: a treasure of the Alto Sangro.

Data on the dam

The dam is a double-curved arch and its construction lasted from 1949 to 1951. The crest elevation is 976 m above sea level and the amount of concrete used is 4,500 m³.

Environment

The lake is included in the list of areas provided for by the Ramsar Convention and is managed by the Autonomous National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The flora of the area is very varied, while the fauna includes brown trout, pike, chub, carp, and perch.

Access

To reach the municipalities that border the lake, three roads can be used: from Castel di Sangro, from Pescasseroli, or from the Forca d'Acero pass through the former State Road 509 of Forca d'Acero.
