Territory

Baronissi is located in the center of the Irno Valley, where the Irno River flows. The municipal territory extends for about 8 km north of Salerno, 5 km from Mercato San Severino and about 35 km from Avellino. Near Capo Saragnano, you find the beautiful Diecimare natural park. The historic center of Baronissi is made up of a group of "casali" located between the hilltop church of "SS.Salvatore" and "Villa Farina," belonging to the local noble family of the same name. The most populous fraction of the municipality is Sava, located east of the capital.

Origin of the name

The name Baronissi probably derives from the word "baronia," which indicated the possession or jurisdiction of the baron.

History

The municipality of Baronissi was founded in 1810 by the French general and king of Naples, Gioacchino Murat, who abolished the feudal system. The historic center of the municipality, made up of a group of casali, is located in the high part of the town to the west. From 1811 to 1860, Baronissi was the capital of the homonymous administrative subdivision of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, belonging to the District of Salerno. From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy, it was the capital of the homonymous mandamento belonging to the Salerno district. In 2010, Baronissi was awarded the title of Italy City.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the flag of Baronissi were granted by decree of the president of the Republic on April 10th, 1975. The flag is a red and white split banner.

Monuments and places of interest

One of the most important monuments in Baronissi is the Convent of the Holy Trinity, whose foundation dates back to 1212 or the early decades of the fifteenth century according to the most in-depth studies. The convent was founded at the behest of St. Bernardino of Siena and St. Giovanni of Capestrano and is famous for its square-based bell tower. In the municipality of Baronissi, there are also several parks and nature reserves, including the Diecimare natural park, perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature.
