Origins of the name

History

The history of Barone Canavese dates back to the 12th century when it began to be mentioned in documents. The municipality was one of the territories of the Valperga family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Canavese. The Barone lords also had jurisdiction over Vische and rights over Andrate, Settimo Vittone, and Brosso, while in the second half of the 13th century, a member of their family was appointed bishop-count of Ivrea. In the 14th century, the castle was destroyed by mercenaries in the service of the Visconti of Milan.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Barone Canavese was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 2, 2007. The band with the hemp plant was the coat of arms of the Valperga family. The gonfalon is a white cloth.

The Castle

Among the most important tourist attractions of Barone Canavese is the Castle, one of the most important baroque architectures in Canavese. Designed by the architect Costanzo Michela between 1772-1774, the castle is composed of two opposed lobes connected by a large central hall 13 meters high. The castle was restored in the 1950s by the scientist Paolo Derossi and is still owned by the Derossi family.

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta

Another important tourist attraction of Barone Canavese is the church of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1729 and 1743 according to a project by the architect Michela.
