The origin of the name

"Barni" derives from the Celtic word "bar", which means pasture.

The history of Barni

The territory of Barni has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the archaeological finds of flint arrows and an ancient tomb. In Roman times, the village was crossed by the Mediolanum-Bellasium road, which connected Milan to Bellagio. In 998, the territory of Barni was donated to the Benedictine monastery of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan.

In the Middle Ages, Barni and Vallassina experienced a brief period of self-government, guaranteed by the Peace of Constance in 1183. Later, the territory was annexed to Milan's possessions. In the Middle Ages, some castles were built such as Tarbiga Castle, of which some testimonies remain, and other towers and castles such as the "sasso della guardia", Castel Farieu, Castel Rott, Castel di Leves.

In 1450 Rufaldo, head of Sforza's militias, took refuge in Tarbiga Castle but had to surrender to the enemy force. In September 1452, the men of Barni took possession of it and donated it to the nobleman Cristoforo de Barni. The pass was guarded until 1578.

During the seventeenth century, the Ravizza doctors from Barni were considered experts in the use of remedies and in the treatment of diseases with the use of herbs and plants. The same activity was resumed in the forties and fifties of the twentieth century by Don Luigi Bricchi.

The village was a fief of the Visconti, Dal Verme, Sforza, Tebaldi and finally the Sfondrati. When the last Sfondrati left no descendants, the town, together with the valley, became part of the V district of the province of Milan controlled by the Austrians.
