Bariano

Bariano: an ancient and enchanting municipality

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Bariano, an Italian municipality located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. This small town, with its 4212 inhabitants, is located in the central plain of Bergamo, about 22 kilometers south of the capital city.

But it's not just an ordinary municipality. The history of Bariano has very ancient roots that make it fascinating and rich in charm. In fact, the first settlements date back to the Ligurian tribes, which were then succeeded by the Cenomani.

According to some researchers, these tribes were the ones who founded the city of Bergamo, before the arrival of the Romans. However, it was the Romans who gave the village the appearance of a real inhabited center.

Bariano in history: from the Romans to the dominations of the Lombards and Franks

Numerous remains are still visible in Bariano's territory, such as inscriptions and tombs, that trace back to the Romans. But with the fall of Roman rule, conflicts between the population's factions began. The Lombards and the Franks then followed with their respective dominations.

An 861 document attests the existence of the toponym Bariano and formalizes the transfer of these lands under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Bergamo, together with the nearby towns of Morengo and Camisano.

In the early thirteenth century, a castle was built near the current parish church for defensive purposes. Often attacked and destroyed, only a few remains are visible today.

The arrival of the Republic of Venice and the end of conflicts

All conflicts between the opposite factions ended only with the arrival of the Republic of Venice in the fifteenth century. It carried out numerous improvements to the social and working conditions, for example by cultivating land and building canals for irrigation.

Among these, the Bergamo ditch is worth mentioning, built to establish the territorial borders between the Venice "land state" and the possessions of the Duchy of Milan. It also bordered the territory of Bariano, delimitating it to the south and west.

Bariano in the twentieth century: industry and the tertiary sector

Since then, Bariano has assumed a strong rural connotation and tradition, with agriculture as the predominant activity. However, during the twentieth century, the working life of the town has changed significantly, with industry and the tertiary sector replacing the cultivation of land.

This has led to a significant demographic increase, relegating fieldwork to a minority activity of the town.

Conclusion: Bariano, an enchanting municipality

In conclusion, Bariano is a municipality with an ancient and enchanting past, still visible in its historical remains and symbolic places. Despite the transformation in the working life of the town, Bariano remains an enchanting municipality immersed in nature, where tradition and modernity mix in perfect harmony.
