Barbianello

Barbianello: a small town in Lombardy

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Barbianello, a town located in Lombardy, in the province of Pavia. The town has only 874 inhabitants and is often referred to as "Barbiané" in the local Oltrepadano dialect. It is located in the plain of Oltrepò Pavese, to the right of the Scuropasso stream, near the Pavia-Stradella railway.

History of Barbianello

Barbianello is a town with an ancient history that dates back perhaps to Roman times, when it was a belonging of a place called "Balbianum", located near the Po river. Destroyed by the river, Balbianum then gave birth to the town of Barbianello. During the Middle Ages, the territory belonged to the Pavia domain and was included in the "podesteria" or squad of Broni, then to the Beccaria fiefdom and to the Arrigoni counts of Milan until the abolition of feudalism in 1797.

Contrary to popular belief, Barbianello has nothing to do with the Barbiano di Belgioioso family. The municipality also includes the hamlets of Bottarolo and San Re, which were both separate municipalities until 1801 and then merged with Barbianello. San Re, in particular, was a possession of the Cluniac Congregation of San Maiolo di Pavia priorate and in 1564 became the property of the University of Pavia.

The coat of arms and flag of Barbianello were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on May 31, 1999. The coat of arms represents the name of the town with the letter B, the wheat ears symbolize the main local economic resource, and the third partition takes up the coat of arms of the Beccaria family, which dominated Barbianello for many years. The flag is a parted cloth of red and white.
