During this period, there were several fratricidal struggles between the factions of the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. In the 9th century, the village was already surrounded by a fortification that was expanded between the 14th and 15th centuries. Today, only some traces of the entrance tower and the battlements of the fortification are visible.
Modern age
After a brief communal period, the area was under the rule of the Visconti of Milan and then of the Republic of Venice. The latter carried out several interventions that improved the social and working conditions of the village, including land reclamation and the construction of canals for irrigation. Since then, agriculture has become the predominant activity of the village, maintaining a strong rural tradition.
Contemporary age
During the 20th century, there were several changes in the village's work life, with the advent of industry and the service sector. Agriculture became a minority part of the local economy. In 2000, the coat of arms and flag of Barbata were granted by decree of the President of the Republic.
