Barbara's physical geography
The historic center stands on two hills that represent the typical hilly ridge of Marche: descending from one side, you reach the Misa river, from the other you encounter the Nevola river. The intermediate and dominant position between the ancient cities of Ostra Antica and Suasa made this territory strategic for controlling the borders.
The history of the city
Barbara has its historical and onomastic roots in the era of the Longobard invasion: towards the end of the 6th century, an outpost of this people settled here, on the border with the territory of the Byzantine city of Senigallia. The new municipality was established thanks to the Jesi protectorate, but it was not able to dissolve the vassalage bonds that lasted until the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. The village became the administrative seat of the extensive possessions of the abbey, now transformed into a commandery, and entrusted to the cardinals of the most important families of the Papal State.
