The history of Barano d'Ischia
The history of Barano d'Ischia begins with the Greeks, the first settlers of the place, who built a nymph dedicated to beauty and health near the Nitrodi source. Later, the site was also inhabited by the Romans and the relics received in the Nitrodi site consist of numerous bas-reliefs and marble inscriptions, Roman Empire coins, and shards of everyday utensils.
The toponym "Barano" is found in two notarial deeds of the year 1300 kept at the Historical Archive of Naples and on a plaque from 1374, which recalls some works of Bishop Bartolomeo Bussolaro. The etymology of Barano is not known for sure, although several scholars have put forward different hypotheses including "contra moerorem," "delightful place," or "Vario's farm."
