Hello everyone! Today we will talk about the beautiful city of Turin, located in northern Italy, in the Piedmont region. With a population of 842,472 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2022), Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy. It is also the heart of a metropolitan area with about 1.7 million inhabitants, which makes it one of the most important cities in the country.

Economy and Culture

Turin is not only a beautiful city, but also an important economic and cultural center. It is the third largest industrial production and economic complex in the country, along with Milan and Genoa. Together they formed the industrial triangle during the years of the Italian economic miracle. Turin is also one of the major centers for universities, art, tourism, science and culture in Italy. Among its places, there are also areas and buildings included in two UNESCO protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site) and the area of the Po hills (Biosphere Reserve).

History

Turin has a two thousand year history. It was founded around the 3rd century B.C. by the Taurini, then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum'' in the 1st century B.C. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, before passing, after becoming the capital of the March of Turin, under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563 it became the capital. From 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) (although only "de facto" until the perfect merger of 1847, when it also became formal), a state that in the 19th century would lead to the Risorgimento and that made Turin the first Capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) (from 1861 to 1865).

Turin: History, culture, and economic excellence in a city that is two thousand years old.

Turin has hosted many important events over the years. In 1911, it was the venue for the Turin International Exposition. In 2006, it was the host of the XX Winter Olympic Games, attracting international attention especially on its numerous monuments. After a few years, from 2021 (until at least 2025), it hosted the ATP Finals. In 2022, it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest, one of the most important musical events in the world.

Gastronomy

Turin is also famous for its delicious food! Among the famous products of Turin are vermouth, Gianduiotto, breadsticks and espresso coffee. Turin is also famous for its wine and chocolate.

Physical Geography

Turin is located in a plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po, with the Po River crossing the city from south to north. The city is located in front of the mouth of some alpine valleys, including the Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels (Frejus railway tunnel and Frejus road tunnel), the Lanzo Valleys and the Sangone Valley.

Conclusions

In short, Turin is a city with a lot of history and culture, a center of excellence for economics and art, and a perfect destination for those who love good food and wine, fashion and sports. If you want to visit a city that has it all, Turin is the right place for you!
