History
Balestrate was founded during the Byzantine period, when the Byzantines built a small fishing village around a defense tower, called Calatacupuni. During the Arab period, the city expanded and the Arabs created an irrigation system, the "sìqayah," which allowed for flourishing agriculture. The city enjoyed prosperous trade thanks to its smugglers who bypassed taxes imposed by governors. During the Middle Ages, the city also hosted a defense tower and an estuary of the Iato River used as a source of drinking water by fleets of military ships.
