A small town in Campania: Welcome to Baia e Latina

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the Municipality of Baia e Latina, a small town located in the province of Caserta in Campania, which has just over 2000 inhabitants. Are you ready to discover everything there is to know about this charming village? Then let's get started!

A territory with ancient origins

Baia and Latina are two small villages that were once separate but, thanks to the law of May 4th, 1811, were united into a single municipality. The history of Baia dates back to the year 979, when it was first mentioned in an imperial Bull. The name "Baia" is said to derive from the term "vaiarulo" (baiardo), which was pronounced "vaìa" in ancient times. Latina, on the other hand, derives from the word "Tina", to which the article "a" was added over time, giving rise to the current name. The municipal coat of arms features two "L L"s, which several archaeological excavations seem to trace back to a "Latina Legio", a Roman legion that would have camped in the area.

The history of the town during World War II

During World War II, Baia hosted the local German command in Palazzo Borelli, while the field hospital was set up in Latina at Palazzo Pieretti. On October 19th, 1943, the American aviation bombed the two towns, which were largely destroyed. The parish church of Santo Stefano di Baia was razed to the ground, as the Germans used it as an ammunition depot. The territory was then guarded by the Germans, preventing the Allies from advancing. The Americans took three days to enter Baia, which was only 4 km away from Latina.
