History

The municipality of Baia e Latina boasts an ancient history dating back to at least 979 when it was mentioned in an imperial bull. The name derives from "vaiarulo" (baiardo), which used to be pronounced "vaìa". Latina, on the other hand, derives from the word "Tina," to which the article was added over time, thus forming the word "Latina".

In the past, the two villages were separate, and it was only during the French domination period (1806-14) that the reunion of the two villages took place. Just a few years earlier - by law of reform in 1806 - the two villages were still separate. With the law of 1811, the municipality of Baia e Latina was included in the district of Formicola, causing indignation among mayors and citizens due to the total absence of roads and connections to reach the district capital.

During World War II, Baia hosted the local German command, while the field hospital was set up in the Pieretti palace in Latina.
