The history of Bagolino
The medieval village of Bagolino was built on one of the routes that connect the Caffaro Valley with the other Brescian and Trentino valleys. The Romans built a station for horse changing in this area, and a small settlement near it arose. It is hypothesized that the name "Bagolino" derives from the term "Pagolus" or "Pagolinus," which means "small village."
Bagolino became part of the Lombard kingdom in the 7th century and was aggregated to the duchy of Trento, together with the entire area that would later be called the Giudicarie area. In the course of the 11th century, the land was ruled by the episcopal principality of Trento, belonging to the Holy Roman Empire. Bagolino was placed under the jurisdiction of one of the "Seven Plea," that of Condino, and at a higher level, under the diocese of Trento.
During the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, Bagolino mainly took care of defending its autonomy, siding alternately with the municipality of Brescia (Guelph) and the episcopal principality of Trento (Ghibelline). In the 14th century, the village was subjected to the domination of the Lords of Lodron, who claimed ancient feudal rights over Bagolino.
In 1440, Bagolino came under the Republic of Venice and remained there until 1797, despite some alternating events. With the Serenissima, the municipality of Bagolino established strong loyalty ties, obtaining in return considerable administrative autonomy. In 1473, it obtained its own statutes, which democratically regulated the participation of the bagosse families in the government of public affairs and guaranteed the functioning of numerous social and solidaristic institutions.
