Welcome to Bagnolo di Po, a small municipality in the province of Rovigo, located in the magnificent region of Veneto. Affectionately known as Bagnolo by its residents, it boasts a rich history dating back to the 4th century, as evidenced by numerous documents from the Republic of Venice and the Estensi family. In this summary, we'll tell you about the history, monuments and places of interest in Bagnolo, its population and culture.

History

The territory of Bagnolo di Po was donated to the Church of Adria in 938 by Almerico d'Este, Marquis of Mantua, and his wife Franca. Over the centuries, the territory developed into a small village, which was frequently affected by flooding from nearby rivers. Thanks to the draining of the marshes carried out in the 15th century by the Bentivoglio family and later in the 19th century with the introduction of pumping equipment, it became possible for people to settle permanently.

The territory passed from the Contrari family (1402) to the Marquis Alfonso Trotti of Ferrara (1506) and then to Marquis Cornelio I Bentivoglio (1560). In 1597, it passed to the Papal State due to a lack of heirs. In the 17th century, Bagnolo di Po suffered numerous river floods, including those of the Po, Adige, Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante, Mincio and Castagnaro. In 1797, the territory passed to the Cisalpine Republic and then in 1815 it was annexed to the Veneto and the province of Rovigo under Austrian domination. In 1866, Bagnolo di Po became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1951, the territory was hit by the Po river flood, which caused depopulation of the town with its inhabitants forced to seek work in industrialized areas.
