Bagnolo del Salento: between history and nature

Origins of the name

The name of the village is believed to derive from the Latin "Balneum-Balneolum" (bath), as it is traditionally believed that the center arose in the Roman era and hosted thermal establishments. However, recent studies suggest that instead, the toponym may derive from the Greco-Byzantine word "Βαλανεῖον" ("Balaneîon" in classical Greek; "Valanìon" in Greek and modern Greek), which means "Basin", proving the existence of an ancient settlement formed at the same time as the production of concrete. The presence of underground aquifers would be essential for the production of the material.

History

The first traces of human presence in Bagnolo del Salento date back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the menhirs in the area. However, the foundation of the center is commonly attributed to the Roman-Imperial era, under the Emperor Vespasian. Once, in fact, Otranto became a Roman colony and, therefore, the surrounding area was affected by a thermal settlement.

During the monarchy-republic referendum in 1946, Bagnolo del Salento stood out for having been the most monarchic municipality in Italy, with 99.41% of votes in favor of the former.
