History
Bagnolo Cremasco has a long and fascinating history dating back to the year 1000. Originally situated on the shores of Lake Gerundo (which no longer exists today), the village's domain changed hands frequently, passing from the Cistercian abbey of Cerreto to important Cremonese families.
The symbols of the town include the coat of arms and flag, both characterized by the color white.
Society
The demographic evolution of the town shows how the population has grown, with a significant presence of foreign citizens (574 as of December 31, 2020). The most numerous national communities are Romanian (230), Egyptian (96), Indian (58), Moroccan (31), Albanian (28), and Chinese (22).
Anthropogenic Geography
The subdivision of the municipal territory is the result of the urban and industrial development that characterized the area during the economic boom of the 1950s and 1960s. The hamlets of Gaeta and Borgogna and the locality of Cascina Santo Stefano constitute the outermost periphery of the inhabited center, while the districts of Luoghi di Sopra, Luoghi di Sotto, Piazza, and Contrada Graffignana are the historic villages renamed in modern times as Rione Nu' sura, Rione Nu' sòt, Rione Centro, Rione La Bassa, and Rione Graffignana.
The hamlets of Gattolino and Moso are two small villages that are part of the municipal territory of Bagnolo Cremasco, while the former hamlets of Gaeta and Borgogna have seen their development increase in recent years.
Infrastructure and Transport
The territory of Bagnolo Cremasco is crossed by the former state roads SS 235 of Orzinuovi and SS 415 Paullese. In the past, at the location of Tormo, there was a stop of the Lodi-Crema-Soncino tramway that followed the former state road 235.
Administration
Since 1985, Bagnolo Cremasco has been led by a series of mayors who have played an important role in the growth and development of the village.
Curiosities
Bagnolo Cremasco can boast a curious connection with one of the most famous characters in Italian literature. It is said that in Bagnolo Cremasco lived, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, that terrible brigand whom Alessandro Manzoni brings back to life in his historical novel The Betrothed with the name of Unnamed. In 1647, he left some property to the oratory of S. Maria delle Grazie in the hamlet of Gaeta.
