Bagnoli di Sopra

A city immersed in nature

Hello friends, today I want to tell you about Bagnoli di Sopra, a beautiful city located in the province of Padua, in Veneto. With its 3313 inhabitants, Bagnoli is a municipality immersed in nature and surrounded by rivers and canals.

The territory of Bagnoli extends between the Adige River to the south and the Gorzone Canal to the north, and is crossed by numerous waterways. The area is famous for its fertile land, agriculture, and wine production.

The history of Bagnoli

The name Bagnoli derives from the word "balneoli", which means "water zone" because this area was once an immense expanse of water from which only the Euganean Hills emerged. Over the centuries, water has always been present in this area, until the complete reclamation of the territory.

The city of Bagnoli was born in the same period as Arre and Conselve, and the first document that mentions the toponym dates back to 954. In this document, the "Dominion of Bagnoli" is mentioned, which was donated to the Bishop of Padua by the marchese and duke of the Lombards, Almerico.

There was no real inhabited center, but only a small village where a church dedicated to San Michele was located. It was only around the year 1000 that the convent of San Michele was built as a "branch" of the Venetian monastery of San Michele and the Trinity of Brondolo.

The Benedictine monks were fundamental for the development of the city, as they carried out reclamation, appropriation, water defense work, and built the first roads. In addition, they contributed to the development of viticulture, building the largest Benedictine cellars of the time.

Towards 1424, the monks of the Benedictine order were replaced by the monks of the order of the Regular Canons of Santo Spirito, who continued the reclamation work and made agreements with the owners of the surrounding areas to improve the drainage of the territories of Bagnoli, Agna, and San Siro.

In 1656, the monastery and all its property were sold to finance the war of Candia against the Turks, and the territory was divided into nine parts. The new owner, Count Ludovico Widmann, had the church of San Michele renovated.

Bagnoli di Sopra: nature, history and wine

The beauty of Bagnoli today

Today, Bagnoli di Sopra is a city rich in history and natural beauty. The historic center, with its narrow streets and stone houses, is a lovely place to start exploring the town.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit the church of San Michele, the convent, and the Benedictine cellars in the church area. In addition, Bagnoli di Sopra is famous for wine production and every year the Grape Festival takes place, where you can taste the best local wines.

The city is also an ideal starting point for excursions into nature, along the Adige River and the Gorzone Canal. I recommend renting a bicycle and riding the cycle path along the Adige River.

In conclusion, Bagnoli is a splendid Venetian city, immersed in nature, and rich in history and tradition. I highly recommend visiting it if you are looking for a suggestive place to spend an unforgettable day.
