Vico Pancellorum

A brief introduction to Vico Pancellorum

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about Vico Pancellorum, a hamlet of the municipality of Bagni di Lucca, located in the province of Lucca, in Tuscany.

The history of Vico Pancellorum

The first bibliographic evidence of Vico Pancellorum dates back to the year 873, in a document that speaks of the jurisdiction of the Church of San Paolo (Vico Pancellorum), which also included the territories of Casoli (Bagni di Lucca) and Limano. The community of Vico, with administrative powers, was established in 1261. Later, the village came under the control of Florence and was ultimately reconquered by Castruccio Castracani. Vico was one of the municipalities of the vicariate of Val di Lima, equipped with its own council and statute. The municipal statutes of Vico Pancellorum of 1636, 1712, and 1724 bear witness to its history.

In 1833, the village had 524 inhabitants.

The parish church of the hamlet is the Church of San Paolo, dating back to the 9th century and is in Romanesque style with three apses dating back to the 12th century. The double sloping façade has a cross-shaped rose window above the main portal, which is decorated with allegorical motifs. The baptismal font of 1551 and the choir loft of the second half of the 17th century are on display inside the church.
