Bagnaria Arsa: History, Traditions, Nature and Typical Friulian Cuisine.

History

Roman times. The settlement of Sevegliano

If you are a history enthusiast, don't miss the opportunity to visit the settlement of Sevegliano. This area saw intense settlement in Roman times, following the foundation of the colony of Aquileia in 181 BC. Along the road from Codroipo and the one that led from Aquileia to Noricum, where they intersected, human settlements and necropolises were built. The settlement of Sevegliano, which arose at the intersection of the two roads, has yielded remarkable evidence of Roman times, such as locally-produced or imported ceramics, milk boilers, and bread ovens. Additionally, rare examples of black painted oil lamps have been found, which were used for lighting. The southern area, instead, was predominantly wooded and less suitable for the creation of important settlements. However, a large building was found along the course of the Castra channel, possibly a villa with attached baths.

Many drainage and reclamation works of the swampy land, preliminarily executed through the reuse of amphorae, are still visible. A series of terracotta elements were also found, which probably belonged to a small Roman temple.

Culture and traditions

Festivals

Another reason to visit Bagnaria Arsa are its festivals. The area is rich in traditions and the community regularly comes together to celebrate some of them. One of the most important is the Festival of the Patron Saint, held in honor of Saint Jerome on September 30th. The festival is celebrated with a solemn procession through the streets of the town and with the blessing of bread. Other important festivals are the Strawberry Festival, which takes place in the spring, and the Prosciutto Festival, which is held in the fall. On these occasions, the main square becomes the center of the celebrations and visitors can enjoy local food and traditional dances.

The natural beauty

Wetlands

If you love nature, do not miss the wetlands of the municipal territory. Here you can admire a wide variety of plants and animals, including numerous species of migratory birds that find refuge in this area. In particular, the Regional Nature Reserve of the Cavanata Valley, near the hamlet of Grado, is a real natural paradise. Here visitors can go hiking, birdwatching, and enjoy the unique landscape of this wetland area.

The local cuisine

Typical products

Finally, you cannot leave Bagnaria Arsa without tasting its typical products. The area is famous for its prosciutto, cold cuts, strawberries, and wine. Friulian typical dishes are simple and tasty, suitable for all palates. Among the dishes not to be missed are cjarsons, ravioli filled with aromatic herbs and cheese, and lasagne di Grado, pasta stuffed with artichokes and accompanied by sclopit, a typical fish of the area.
